PBS NC-Impact: Alzheimer's and Dementia Care

We are honored to have been part of the filming of the PBS NC-Impact show that spotlighted Dementia-Friendly businesses in the Triangle. This is a cause close to our hearts at The Downsizers, because working with clients who are living with dementia is one of our specialties. These projects are uniquely meaningful, and we approach them with care, patience, and an understanding of the little details that make a world of difference.

A Move Process with Dementia in Mind

When we guide families through the phases of the move process, Plan. Sort. Pack. Settle., our priority is minimizing stress. For clients with dementia, we know that stress can accelerate symptoms. That’s why we pay close attention to how their current environment supports familiarity, comfort, and independence.

Here are some of the ways we do this:

  • Replicating Familiar Spaces – We take photos and note key details of the client’s current setup. For example, where essentials are stored in the bathroom: the toothbrush to the left, the face towel to the right, lotions in the drawer. These small consistencies help maintain muscle memory and reduce confusion.

  • Preserving Meaningful Visuals – Art, family photos, and treasured décor are not just decorations, they’re anchors of memory and comfort. We make sure they’re placed in familiar spots to create continuity in the new home.

  • Supporting Daily Routines – Nightstands, lamps, and personal items are arranged in ways that mirror the old space, so that essentials are always within easy reach.

Why Muscle Memory Matters

One of the last functions to go in dementia is muscle memory, which makes it incredibly important to honor during a move. The way a client reaches for a drawer, switches on a lamp, or even chooses clothing is tied to their sense of independence and dignity.

That’s why we focus on details such as:

  • Hanging art in similar locations to what they’re used to.

  • Arranging drawers and storage so essentials are always accessible.

  • Choosing clothing that is easy to slip on and off, avoiding buttons or closures that could cause frustration.

Sharing Our Work Through PBS

Our time with PBS NC-Impact allowed us to illustrate how we support clients and families who are navigating a move with a loved one living with dementia. It was an opportunity to share the thoughtful steps we take to make each transition smoother and more dignified.

But what made the feature even more powerful was that it also highlighted many other wonderful businesses in the Triangle who are dedicated to serving this community. Together, we are building a stronger, more compassionate network of dementia-friendly services, each committed to creating environments where individuals and families feel understood and supported.
